Space and Planets

Second grade students learned about outer space and the planets and in our solar system through a collage artwork.  First we read the story "Stars, Stars, Stars" by Bob Barner.  Then we create planets using construction paper and water color pencils to add details.  As students worked on their planets, I called groups over to the "splatter paint" table. There, they created a space background using black paper, white and silver paint and a tooth brush.  The next day, we use white chalk and black charcoal to add the highlights and shadows to our collage!

Enjoy the 2nd grade results!

  1. I love these! I will save the idea for when we study the solar system next year!

  2. These are unbelievably cool! Did you glue the planets on top of something to raise them off of the surface? Spectacular!
