For the first project with my new kinders, I decided to be brave and get out the paint! They LOVED this stamping project. We used paper towel tubes that I cut smaller to create the Olympic Rings. Students had to identify the 5 colors of the rings and the circle shape. This was also the prefect project to introduce the "do's & don'ts" of painting in art class. They all did a fantastic job! Check out some of their work below.
Welcome to my blog! I'm hoping to compile my adventures and experiences as an elementary art teacher here. This blog is full of art lessons, ideas, student artwork, and resources for parents, students, friends and other art educators. Enjoy!

Ladybugs
Kindergartners listened to the story "The Grouchy Ladybug" by Eric Carle as inspiration for their ladybug collage. When asked, "What lesson did the grouchy ladybug learn?" students answered: "To share", "Not to fight other animals", and "to share the aphids with the nice ladybug."
Students used colored construction paper and sharpies to make a ladybug collage. Check out a few samples below!

Pattern Zebra
Kindergarten students used a lot of different materials to create these pattern zebras. (Paper, yarn, googly eyes, and buttons!)
They described the similarities and differences between their collage zebras and zebras in real life.
-"These ones have lots of colors, and real zebras are only black and white."
-"They don't really have button eyes."
-"Mine is a rainbow zebra. That one (pointing to a picture in a book) only has 2 colors."
Student also had to identify and create an "AB" pattern in the stripes of the zebra.
This was a great lesson to connect math, science and art! Take a look at the cute zebra collages below!

Emotion Masks
Another great lesson from our student teacher, Ms. Guiffre. Kindergarten students created emotion masks, inspired by the movie Inside Out. Ms. Guiffre read the story Journey Into The Mind and talked about the different emotions kids feel everyday. The students were able to choose any emotion they wanted to portray in their mask with their choice of colored tempera paint. Kinders loved creating their masks, adding hair and acting out their emotions at the end of class!

Andy Warhol Inspired Hand Prints
Kindergarten students created a series of hand prints inspired by pop artist Andy Warhol. During this project, they used fine motor skills to fold paper, trace hands, and outline areas with tempera paint. We also worked on "non-matching" of background and hand colors. The final step was their favorite! They got to dip their hands in black tempera paint to make the 6 hand prints!
5 Senses Painting
Last week was the Kindergarten "Day 0". Their theme was the 5 senses. Students used their sense of smell when they worked with fruit scented tempera paint to create a still life picture of a fruit bowl. Check out their masterpieces below!

Tee-pees and Turkeys
Happy Thanksgiving from Kindergarten!
For most of November, we have been working on tee-pees and turkeys! Tee-pee making was a two day event. First, they painted the background. The next day kindergarten students learned about lines and patterns. They decorated their tee-pees with different kinds of lines then practiced their cutting skills to finish off the project! We were able to finish the turkeys in just one 40 minuet class! Students used oil pastels and watercolor paints to draw and paint their turkeys. Check out their artwork below & hope to see you at the Kindergarten feast tomorrow!
