Quilling

Fourth grade students learned about the colonial craft of quilling.  Quilling is the art of rolling paper.  Quilling was used in Colonial Virginian times to embellish cards, wedding invitations, etc. Students used colored construction paper to create the first letter of their first name or last name.  The inside of the letters are decorated with various quilling shapes.  Check out their hard work below!  

Circle Weaving

Forth grade students learned about weaving for their "Day 0" this past month.  Important weaving vocabulary they learned was: Loom, Warp, and Weft.  Students also made an arts-social studies connection by learning about weaving in Colonial Virginia.  They discussed reasons why people weave and brainstormed examples of things that are woven.  Check out their circle weaving below! 

Van Gogh Sunflowers

Second graders learned about the artist Vincent Van Gogh.  This lesson focused on Van Gogh's sunflower paintings.  I set a vase with sunflowers in it on each table before students came in.  Students learned about drawing from observation and how to use the basic shapes to draw a still life picture.  On painting day, students used the secondary colors to paint their pictures.  The last step was to add a black outline!  When 2nd graders were done with their painting, they completed a graphic organizer as an assessment tool. Five Senses Painting

Kindergarten students learned about the 5 senses on their Day 0.  (Day 0 is a special resource day at my school, where 1 grade level has resource all day long!  They go to PE, Art, Music, Library, Computer and a Math station.  The resources for the other grade levels are canceled that day.  Every grade level will have a Day 0 once during the school year).

For Kindergarten's Day 0 in Art, they used their sense of smell!  Students used fruit smelling tempera paint to create their fruit bowl still life pictures.  Check out their artwork below!

Jasper Johns Letters & Shapes

Kindergarten students learned about the Pop Artist, Jasper Johns.  Jasper Johns was famous for painting recognizable images such as the American Flag, Numbers or Letters.  Kindergarten students used foam letters and foam shapes to create their own masterpieces!  Check them out below!

Positive & Negative Shape

4th Grade students learned about positive and negative shapes in artwork.  To demonstrate their knowledge they created these lines and pumpkin pictures.  Check them out below!
