The Dot

Welcome back students!  I'm so excited to begin my 9th year of teaching!  Where has the time gone?!

For the first week of art classes, we had just enough time for a mini art project after we reviewed the art room rules.  Students listened to the story, "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds and then created their own dot-inspired artwork. Check out some of their creations below!

Zentangle Portraits

Ms. Guffire introduced students to the surrealism art movement by sharing the works of Dali and Magritte.  Students describe the art as "dream like" and "bizarre".  For this project, they chose an image from a magazine to create a unique surrealist inspired portrait.  Students added zentangle patterns that focused on line variety and pattern.  Check out their artwork below!

Ugly Dolls

4th grade students LOVED making their soft sculpture Ugly Dolls.  I originally got the idea for the Ugly Doll project from a fellow art educator, Mr. E.  (You can check out his blog here: Art With Mr. E)  Students learned the basics of sewing and 3 dimensional art by drawing and then creating their Ugly Doll with burlap, felt and yarn.  Many of my  students decided to name their dolls and write a short story about their characters.  This was a really great lesson to tie in reading and writing to! Take a look at some of the amazing creations below!

Illustrating the Dictionary

Fourth grade students created their own illustrations to go along with a word they found in the dictionary.  Each student received a different page from the dictionary.  Next, they brainstormed at least 2 ideas of illustrations they could draw, using the words on their page.  For the final copy, students drew their illustration right on the dictionary page, outlined it with black marker and then used water color paints to add color.  Can you guess the word each student chose?
