Thiebauld Cakes

4th grade students learned about the artist Wayne Thiebaud and his work with sweets!  This lesson also incorporated fractions in art.  I used a website from the National Gallery of Art to help connect art & math concepts.  Here's the link: Frosted Fractions  The NGA website has lots of great ideas for art & cross-curricular connections.  Be sure to check it out!

Mosaics

For third grade's day zero project, they learned about mosaics!  The theme for the day was "Greek and Roman day".  Since the lesson had to be a short, 1 day project- I had pictures of Greek and Roman things for them to choose from.  Normally, I would have them draw their own Greek or Roman symbol. They used pre-cut tiles to create the design inside their symbol. Check out their mosaics below! 

Up Close Snowman

First grade students learned about enlarging and zooming in to the picture plane.  They listened to the story "Snowball" by Lois Ehlert and talked about what it is like to build a snow man.  Although, with this mild winter- they didn't really get much experience in the snow man building area! Check out their art work below!

Space and Planets

Second grade students learned about outer space and the planets and in our solar system through a collage artwork.  First we read the story "Stars, Stars, Stars" by Bob Barner.  Then we create planets using construction paper and water color pencils to add details.  As students worked on their planets, I called groups over to the "splatter paint" table. There, they created a space background using black paper, white and silver paint and a tooth brush.  The next day, we use white chalk and black charcoal to add the highlights and shadows to our collage!

Sock Monkey!

I found this lesson on the DeepSpaceSparkle blog.  She did this lesson with 3rd graders, but I adapted my lesson for Kindergarteners.  I borrowed a sock monkey from our school's library to show as an example.
 Kindergartners talked about the different types of antique toys, and brainstormed some of their own examples.  This was a two day project.  On the first day, students focused on drawing using simple shapes (ovals, circles, rectangles, semi circles).  After the drawing was complete, they used tempera paint to add color. The second day was decoration day!  I set out trays of ribbon, buttons, beads, sparkles and scrap paper.  Students created shirts, hats, crowns and added other embellishments to their sock monkeys.

Cardinals

4th grade students learned about our state bird, the cardinal! This was a quick one day project that included drawing and painting.  First, students drew their cardinal and tree branches with black oil pastel.  Next they used tempera paint to fill in the color.  The last step was the snow flakes!  They used the end of their brush to make the falling snow.  Check out our cardinals below!
