Lady Liberty

First grade students learned about the artist Peter Max and his work with American symbols. They mixed the 3 primary colors to create their colorful backgrounds and then drew the Statue of Liberty with black oil pastel.  Check out their Lady Liberty's below! 

 

Art Club Bugs

5th Grade art club students created three-dimensional bugs as their first project. 

Step1 : They used balloons and warm or cool colored tissue paper to create the body form.  Once the bodies dried, they popped the balloons inside and added dots to the underside of the bug.

Step 2: Students used cloud clay (white model magic) to mold the head, stinger and beads (to be used on the wings later).  Again, they stuck with the warm or cool color pallet when painting their creations. 

Step 3, 4, & 5: Create the wings out of wire! Create crazy legs using art straws & wire! Finally, last but not least, glue everything together.  Check out their bugs below! 

Where the Buffalo Roam

Second grade students learned about the difference between a buffalo and a bison.  This was a 2 day project.  Day 1: Drawing the Buffalo and Bison.  After they drew their animals on black paper, they added fur with brown paint.  Day 2: Painting a landscape background.  Students drew the horizon line first, then added a sun and rolling hills.  Next, they cut out their animals and used white glue to attach them to the landscape! Leaf Prints

I did this project last year as well, but it was such as huge hit I had to do it again!  First grade students learned about printmaking while making these beautiful leaf prints.  First, they use white paint to print their leaves on black paper.  Next they used small sponges to outline their leaves with the warm colors.  They also used the sponges to fill in the background. 

Warm & Cool Landscapes

Third grade students studied the different parts of landscapes- background, middle ground and foreground.  They discussed examples of each section as a class and then drew their landscapes with glue on black paper. The next day, they used warm and cool colored oil pastels to add color. 

Shapes and Lines

First grade students learned about different kinds of shapes- Geometric and Organic.  They drew geometric shapes using oil pastels.  Next, they filled their geometric shapes with a variety of lines. The last step was add organic shapes using water color paint! Check out their artwork below! 

Where's Waldo Bulliten Board

Wait, change that title! It should say, "Where's Mrs. Timmons & Mr. Collins?" 

The first week of art classes is always a little tough to plan.  There are so many things to go over! Rules, emeregncy procedures, where supplies are, student seats, etc.  All of thoes introduction things usually take up the 1st of my art class, which leaves me with only 20 mintuets to teach! So for the first project, I had all students create a self-portrait.  My only rule was, no stick people! I let the kids draw themselves how ever they wanted, doing whatever they wanted!  Next, I collected all the self-portraits and hung them up to create the "Where's Mrs. Timmons & Mr. Collins?" board! Students, partents and teachers have had a great time look for our principals and themselves!
